Post subject:  Chinese name for "Go Uncle"
Stopped by Empty Sky Go Club tonight to play some go, and our local Go guru was there as usual. It is a university club at RIT and although it has many student members and is run by students, people in the community are welcome to come and join, though they cannot hold office or vote.

Our "guru" has been around for many years, has traveled extensively in Asian playing Go and according to one of the students, he was ranked 3 dan AGA at one point ( I have not verified this).

I asked him if Go is really considered a form of martial arts in Asia as Janice Kim claims, and he said, "it could be." I told him then, that would make him sort of the sensai of our club. He said he was not quite good enough to consider himself a sensai, but would call himself what in Chinese is known as a "Go Uncle." He claimed that this was a specific term used in Chinese Weiqi circles, but could not recall the Chinese term for Go Uncle.

Has anyone ever heard of this term, or know the equivalent name in Chinese? "Weiqi Shushu" perhaps?

Hmm, perhaps a native speaker can help?

I didn't have much luck on Baidu searching for: 围棋叔叔、围棋舅舅、棋叔叔、弈叔叔、or 弈舅舅。 If one of those was correct and it's common usage there should be more results than I found.

I do know that in some martial arts the students of the same master are called brothers and sisters. Continuing the metaphor, they would be uncles and aunts to the student of another student. But if so, they would usually just say uncle or aunt, without modification, just as they say brother or sister. So if you searched for uncle without modification, you might find a special martial arts or weiqi usage.

Hi,

I think 棋叔 (qíshū) will do if you use it in association with your friend family name (or to a lesser extend his first name) in this form:

It will definitively work better if your friend has a Chinese family name (one syllable name):
  • Táng: 唐棋叔
  • Chén: 陈棋叔
  • Lǐ: 李棋叔

But you cannot use 棋叔 alone.

If your friend has traveled extensively in Asia, he probably already has a chinese nickname (a korean one will do as well).

Thanks for all the responses. <name> qishu seems to make sense because of qi and shu for uncle?

EdLee: I speak English with him, not sure what other languages he might or might not know. I will have to remember how to spell sensei!! Thanks!

Might be a local dialect, as a native speaker I've not encountered that term (unless it's just "uncle" - 大叔).

It's the shu shu sound. I am positive of it since I heard it in a lot of chinese martial arts movies.

Could be confusing... :)

With accent marks for the tones:
wéi qí 圍棋. Go. :)
qì 氣. Liberty/Liberties -- in Go.
qì gōng 氣功. Same as Liberty qì, but different from wéi qí.
tài jí 太極. jí different from both qí and qì.

With numerals for the tones:
wei2 qi2 圍棋. Go.
qi4 氣. Liberty/Liberties
qi4 gong1 氣功. Same as Liberty qi4, but different from wei2 qi2.
tai4 ji2 太極. ji2 different from both qi2 and qi4.

Thanks, Ed. :) I used to write taichi, but switched to taiji. I thought that taiqi might be a different romanization.

IIUC, some meanings of 氣 are close to prana in yoga.
