Having to browse some toyshops for prezzies the grandkids on a recent trip, I saw rather a lot of the variants of Monopoly that change the traditional streets to fit with soccer teams, your local town, etc. On the plane back, I got to thinking whether go could have its own variant. "If you pass Go, collect £200" can easily change to "If you play Go...." Go to Jail might become Go to KGS - you don't escape until you win a game. The streets might become tournaments that you "win". If you collect a clutch of related titles you don't buy houses and hotels but rather can cash in with endorsements or books. Bank error in your favour might change to joseki error in your favour. Any other suggestions? |

I just have to say that the "don't escape until you win the game" part is hilarious. I'm not sure if wms views the server as a "jail", but it's still pretty funny. |

I was thinking that KGS would be a poor jail since everyone knows it does not handle escapers ![]() |

There's a set my friend got called 'Make your own -opoly'. It's made to have this sort of thing be made from it. Perhaps the railroads can be corners? Or volumes of books? |

Actually that's a brilliant idea for real-life Go too: TO THE PATENT OFFICE! ![]() |

I gotcha. You could have the Jail Card be called "Atari" cause it represents you're on you're last life line. You could call the Jail itself the "Captured Stones." Let's see, money could be called Territory points instead of money. lol I dunno, just throwing ideas around. |

I think the luxuries would be to pay for or payoff some new stones or gobans. Rolling a double would be "sente" and you get to go again. The most "expensive" streets would be named after pro players. Ex:(Lee Sedol Ave.) I wonder what the playing pieces would be. ![]() |

I would also like to see Gu Li and Gan Siyang in go-opoly. Perhaps the oddest fuseki/joseki could be boardwalk. |

Quote: Maybe in place of Community Chest, you have "Handicap"? It's fitting because Community Chest cards are usually beneficial, and handicaps work likewise. But this is another example (like win by resignation) of the peculiar usage of English in go. In real life if you have a handicap you are the one worse off. In go you are better off. Some people dislike the overtones of "handicapped" so maybe we could use the twee alternative "learning-disabled" in go. This will give White some psychological compensation for the handicap! Or, if we need a go-specific version, how about "lithically disabled"? In Japanese, handicap go is oki-go. The quaint traditional custom of a group of people shouting "oki, oki, oki" when a handicap game starts is now seen only in British pubs full of students, and of course nowadays they usually dispense with the go set. |

I thought "handicap" was used the same way in golf. I don't play golf so I'm probably totally wrong. |
