Sitting in a coffee shop right now...two cups of coffee, and all of a sudden I feel like I'm rushing everything. Playing sloppy, reacting on opponents play rather than whole board thinking...anyone find this to be a bad combination (caffeine & go)? I'm thinking that this shouldn't be the way to play...although the coffee shop that I'm in right now really sets the tone for playing.

I have been wondering about coffee and Go myself. Recently I have taken to playing morning and supping my three pot french press, at first it seemed like it was detrimental either drinking the coffee or playing go early in the morning, however it seems my play in that situation is better than my after dinner games these days. I think I would do it more, except every other day I like to go for a run.

Neither the coffee nor the combination is the problem. :)

You mean … it’s as simple as “Go is an @sshole”?

But I also have made the experience that too much coffee makes me jittery, not (only) meaning being physically doddery but rather being nervous and erratic, and not only with regard to Go.

Bonobo, I should've said none of Go, coffee, or the combo is the problem. :)

Everything in moderation. If we have too much of it, even water can be toxic.

Ah, understand. Once I lost an online tournament game on time because I had too much tea or coffee in me that I had to get rid of

Better not click “Show”.
Guess I should never play a tournament game again w/o an in situ catheter plus foley bag

Go is the greatest board game ever made.

Coffee is a fantastic drink.

Together they should be great! But I can see how it could cause problems for some people.

I don't struggle too much when I've had coffee, but I do find myself getting a bit jittery sometimes making it harder, on rare occasion, to play a stone.

However, I will say that go and tea are a more traditional mix. Go and green tea especially. That instantly raises your strength by 1 rank. Why do you think pros have tea at their games, eh? It's like taking a potion of strength in Minecraft...

Go is what got me started drinking tea (instead of just coffee).

My only problem with coffee and go is dipping your fingers into the cup instead of the bowl...

Very disconcerting.

this, and putting prisoners there, too. And even worse permutations (ALL of them!) when there were no non-smokers at the meeting …

Yes! Especially when the coffee is hot! :)
The correct placement tesuji for the coffee (or any open cup of drink) is on the opposite side of your bowl.

My level drops by a few stones when there are no coffee available at a tournament.

Then again, I'm a math major and drinking coffee doesn't really make me nervous (under 5 cups a day at least). I'm often getting some weird looks when I take my last coffee around 1 or 2 am...

I haven't done that, but I still say expecting "cold and smooth" on your fingertips and getting "(at least) warm and wet" made me jump a little each time I did it.

At my club, I also sometimes eat while playing and have found a good range of "one-handed" meals. Who wants to start the "Food and Go" thread? No Cheetos!
