John Power says that this year was the 1st Shin Ryusei. But, as we remember, it was held last year. So isn't this year's edition the 2nd? Has the numbering been revised (eg. due to changing sponsor), or did John Power make a mistake?

John Power's article: https://www.usgo.org/news/2022/05/the-p ... streaks-p/ Sensei's Page: https://senseis.xmp.net/?ShinRyusei

On a similar note, Daniela Trinks said that this year saw the 1st Hoban Cup. But it was first held last year. See https://senseis.xmp.net/?HobanCup.

Shin Ryusei started last year and the final was this year in January/Feb (as John Power states).

The Hoban last year was the Hoban Women's Strongest Tournament, a domestic league. The new Hoban Cup is an international team event. No different from the Senko business.

John Power has the best English reporting on Go I can find but sometimes he is even more delayed than Go World magazine, which is already a couple months behind. He just aggregates the news over weeks/months. Is this delay causing the confusion?

I'm sure you've seen it but the Nihon Kiin lists all of the tournaments: https://www.nihonkiin.or.jp/match/

The normal Ryusei (竜星戦) is listed under domestic tournaments (国内棋戦) with the main tournaments (kisei, etc) but the Shin Ryusei is in a different section "other tournaments" (その他棋戦). https://www.nihonkiin.or.jp/match/shinryusei/001.html

Hoban is indeed International (国際棋戦) as Fairbairn said. https://www.nihonkiin.or.jp/match/hoban/001.html

If you're on PC you probably know the trick of scrolling over to see the URL. If you're on mobile (Android at least) you can long press but it's much slower than hovering on PC.
