...are often wrong until after the rounds have been played. If it says that the winners of game A & B will meet in the semis, that might not be the case. After the two games are played, the tournament tables sometimes get reshuffled. See the Samsung thread for one illustration (viewtopic.php?f=13&t=1591&start=60). At least this seems to be the case for international tournaments, I have not noticed it happening for Japanese domestic tournaments.

Posted in its own thread since this comes up on the board every month or two.

Thanks for enlightenment. I just read the article that pairings were made according to lottery. I just never met such system before. It's a pity that 2 main favorites to win the Cup met so early (Gu Li and Lee Sedol).

The lottery explanation makes complete sense. Did the article say when the pairings are announced? Or do you wake up and find out who you're playing?

On the second thought I now realize that random pairings really make sense. As I read a lot that before important games pros study a lot of their opponent's games. Maybe to avoid this random pairings are used.

There was only one mention about this: "In the quarter finals, Lee Sedol and Gu Li 9P faced by lottery." - No more details.

That's a good question. Maybe somebody knows about it?

If you look at the tournament tables you will notice that for most tournaments the next round is drawn is such a matter matches between players from the same country are avoided as far as possible. The only exceptions to this that I'm aware of are the BC Card cup and the preliminaries to the LG Cup and the Samsung Cup. This requires of course that the drawing for the next round is done after the current round is finished.

I hope Mr. Kin is well. He isn't updating his page since three weeks. Since I started playing Go this never happened before.

euhm... do you still checking on his old site (http://igo-kisen.hp.infoseek.co.jp/news.html)? He said that infoseek ends its free service so it moves here http://igokisen.web.fc2.com/news.html

Thanks, Biondy! I didn't know that. I have been checking the site several times in hopes of catching some pro games...but then realized that it wasn't even updated in like forever.
