RTX 4090 with 450W have had several versions of 12-pin connectors, plugs and cables with melting danger. RTX 5090 with excessive price, no supply, underwhelming generational changes and 575W starts to have the same problems and cables can quickly reach 160°C despite the firmest connection, according to der8auer at Youtube. I cannot know whether two 12-pin connectors and cables would solve the heat problems for an RTX 6090. In general, desktop GPUs with more than 400W are in great danger of dying and possibly also killing cables and PSUs. Water cooling would not solve the issues because it does not cool the cables and their plugs. Some of us have the dream of eventually buying two or more 90 tier GPUs. I think this is unreasonable unless they go back to at most 400W with, say, three 8-pin connectors. Four 80 tier GPUs make more sense! To fit them onto one motherboard, water cooling or PICe riser cables are solutions. Do not forget about the power bill, especially in Germany... Even lower tier GPUs profit from dust cleaning every four months and might need occasional repasting if hot spot die temperatures tend towards 115°C. Ruthlessly, Nvidia hides hot spot temperatures of RTX 5000. Besides, Nvidia and OEMs try to blame the endconsumers for melting issues killing their GPUs. My one 200W GPU may not be the fastest but it gives me peace of mind. |

A correction is already necessary as an RTX 5080 cable of that 360W card has also melted at the PSU end because apparently the current goes unbalanced to the pins: https://www.reddit.com/r/ASUS/comments/ ... 7#lightbox Maybe no RTX 5000 is safe if the 12 pin standard has deteriorated compared to RTX 4000? At least one should await further investigation (and huge price drops). |
