I was wondering if KGS offers a "time limit per move" filter for game selection ?

If so, is it easy to find beginner level games with low time limits per move (say 1 or 2 minutes max) ?

I'm a total beginner and only play machines but recognize I must play humans. If the other guy takes a break mid-game (or just thinks WAY too long) I would resign just out of frustration. I realize this is a character flaw so you don't need to point that out ! :-)

many thanks,

many thanks,

A minute per move implies a game that lasts two to three hours. A "slow" game on KGS (30 minutes main time per player, plus 30 seconds per move after that) will usually take less than an hour. You'll be lucky to find an opponent who spends 30 seconds on each move, let alone a minute. Blitz games are even quicker.

But is what you find frustrating the average length of the moves, or the maximum possible length? The set-up of time controls for Go is premised on the idea that you want to have the freedom to play your average moves at a nice clip, but then spend much more time analyzing the most important moves. Personally I think you should start doing this yourself.

Anyway, you can't filter the games but if you hover your mouse over someone else's game offer, the time settings that they have chosen will pop up. Or you can put up your own offer, as oren suggests.

Yes it's more the maximum possible length of time, like they go for coffee and stay logged on. But you've given me a much better idea of what to expect and I think it'll be fine. I definitely want to play there (as opposed to Panda, etc.) , as soon as I get a little more experience and graduate to playing on a 19X19 board. That seems like being shipwrecked in the middle of an ocean to me! Not many 13X13 games on KGS when I looked ...

It's very rare that someone will just take a break in the middle of a game. You'll play ten games where your opponent only uses ten minutes of his main time during the entire game for each game where he uses five minutes on a single move. But I can't guarantee that it won't happen.

As for 13x13, that's right. Generally beginners play on 9x9 and the graduate directly to 19x19. However, if you asked I'm sure someone would play 13x13 with you, and moreover at the right time of day you can easily find people who would be happy to orient you on a 19x19 board.
