Yup.

If you really feel you must re-enable Java before Oracle patches their latest screw up, the following link will tell you how:

Happened to me tonight: Suddenly CGoban wouldn’t start, I got some error msg, no idea why this happened since I’d run it yesterday w/o any problem.

Try this:

- download http://files.gokgs.com/javaBin/cgoban.jnlp

- launch it, it will install CGoban anew and place an alias on your desktop which you can move wherever you want

- double-click to launch CGoban

Worked for me with OS X 10.7.5 and latest Java from http://java.com/

HTH, Tom

There is no need to reinstall KGS. Just update your Java to the version Oracle released today -- which you most definitely want to do anyways -- and it will run again.

Another sneaky sort of emergency solution is the following

download http://files.gokgs.com/javaBin/cgoban-nfa.jar
place in your home directory
open terminal
type in terminal java -jar cgoban-nfa.jar

You always have to start cgoban from the terminal, and you have to leave the terminal open.
If you can't roll back your java - you can always try this.

You could also create a file called "kgs" or "cgoban", put the "java -jar" line into there, and save it to your /usr/bin directory. Then, at the command line, enter

chmod a+x /usr/bin/kgs

Then, just create a new icon on your tray which links to your newly created file.

I don't think it would be that hard, even if you haven't done anything like this before.

I had the same problem. Contrary to your post, I did need to reinstall KGS after upgrading Java.

Oddly, the fonts have changed (crappy) in the game list and users section.

Okay, after installing the new version of Java, and re-installing KGS, things are a little different.

First, every time I load KGS, I see the Java 7 load screen first. (This didin't happen in the past).

Second the fonts are funny on the users and games screen.

Third, the client no longer clicks when a stone is played. (And the preference is set correctly)

Any ideas on how to fix? TIA.

This didn't work for me. Did it for anybody else?

I have no idea why this worked. But it did. Thanks squirrel.

The regularly downloaded version still has no sound, which renders it very undesirable to me.
But Javaness's way clicks nicely. (Seriously, why?)

The fonts are still screwy in both, but I can deal with that and a little terminal hassle.

Come on WMS, let's get Java 7 compatible! Or HTML5, or whatever.

Just curious what OS you guys are on. I'm still on Snow Leopard, and just updating the Java fixed everything for me.

The one thing that has always annoyed me about Apple -- I have no way of knowing which animal I have. I can tell you a version number, but not an animal.

Hmm, interesting. I'd have thought they'd end up running the same way...
There is a little configuration hack you can do to get the fonts back. I remember giving it to XY0908 when I still had a mac.

I found this method on the fridge, I should have remembered it myself really

I have Mountain Lion on the laptop. I had to update Java and I also had to uninstall and reinstall Cgoban.

I haven't checked my iMac yet. That has Lion on it. I'm just glad that the laptop is working again.
