Good luck, and have fun! This game I want to try and find balance in my opening. I've been told that my opening is TERRIBLE, and I can't really refute that at the moment. Going to open with 2 4-4 stones. From there, I'll see what happens. |

My opponent has just beaten lovelove 5d at 8 stones. That's actually pretty good. Probably the the handicap is too low. I will do my best, but will resign if he destroys me. Regarding the orientation of the 3-4 point, the other one allows an early approach like the following a little bit more than the game orientation. That is not to say it is bad, as pros play that way all the time, but since I don't have to give komi, I would like to reduce possible complications from the get-go. I play both ways a lot, actually, so often it's just my feeling that day.

Tight, territorial style. Chinese opening, etc. is popular now, but that's mostly due to high komi. |

I've been playing this approach to a shimari for a little while now, trying to get familiar with the positions it creates. |

The left side is biggest now as white can make a double wing, so approach is a common idea. However:
Because the marked white stone is extended further and not at 'a', there is enough room to invade at ![]() DDK: White's kick works well if white is extended narrower and black invades. The black invasion is common for play black in the game actual game situation where there is more room, but I wouldn't expect to see it here this early in the game when there are so many other open areas.

Nice and simple. |

The slide seems fine. It makes miai of the corner and the side. But there are other ways to go that I can't say are bad. Another idea is to extend immediately down the side, seeking something like this:
I also considered this, just being light on the left side and seeing what white does next. White's corner is still open this way:

Normal move to keep a base and avoid a sente white approach near ![]() |

Nothing unusual here. I approach the final corner from the side with the most space. We'll see what he decides to do here. |

The right side is a little bigger than the top if you count the gap marked by the x's, so I don't pincer.

A very calm game so far ... this is all just to set up for the massive middle-game fight ... right? ![]() |

The right side has more open space, but this prevents a short double wing. |

I am not an escaper. Just a parent of a young child. But it's all good, because I'm teaching her go now. There is a variation he can play here that I'll really hate, but it is not necessarily bad for me. I just hate it, that's all. |
