The below game was won by White on time, as Black let the clock run out. I would like a review of this game, at least to know who was ahead therein and by how much. Much obliged in advance. |

Hi tekesta, was this your game ? If so, which color were you ? What's your estimate ? |

It's hard for me to tell just who was ahead at the time of the last move. (My counting ability is not there yet.) I know Black has territory on the right and top sides, except for a White territory on the left side at top. White has a center territory and territory on the left side. The White center can be reduced rather easily. If Black can make use of the J5 stone the reduction can be painful for White. Also, by White 40 Black still has a big area on the top. Would it have been better to begin invading that at around this point in the game, perhaps at G17 or H17? Now that I have said that much, would you or another member have the time to review my game? |

The game is pretty even. Till move 36 you (White) played a good game considering your strength. As for your question of invading the top around move 40: D17 or C17 is the way to go, maybe with K16 as a first probe move before. Your invasion at H17 was wrong, also because at this point your top right group was way too weak and should have given priority. Do not worry too much about this game. Do memorize the first 100 moves of 100 pro games and I guarantee you SDK after that. |

Some comments: Everything up to move 23 seems fine. Move 24 push is generally a bad habit. The difference is not huge, but you lose a ko threat (because that push pretty much requires a response and black won't play move 24 himself) as well as weakness around S5 (not possible at the moment, but you lose the possibility of moves around there in the future if you become stronger in that area). Move 36 I think you can just break through with P8. The possible sequences afterwards if black responds with R8 (anything else that allows you to connect there is obviously a great result for white) is numerous, but you will be fine as long as you get Q11 hane in and remember the weakness at S7. Move 38 has to be the connect, the game move loses at least 20 points. Connecting there is like making a fist before you strike. I like move 46, shows the right spirit. At the end position, I slightly prefer white, but my counting/positional assessment is absolutely awful so don't trust it too much :p |
