Hello I will be very glad to get some pointers on this game. What do you think I should have done to play a better game? I'm white. |

You played 150 moves in less than 15 minutes, that is an average 6 sec per move. What bothers me in this kind of thread, is that you ask someone to spend more time on your game than yourself have spent. Sorry if I sound rude... |

At move 8, the P16-P17-Q14 exchange is very strange. Typical (joseki) responses to P17 are O17, Q16, or O16. If you don't like any of these followups, you'd better have a plan, or perhaps you shouldn't play P16. What followed in the corner was nonsense, from both sides. Slow down and read sequences out, count liberties, etc. For example, W36 missed T17, and then later W46 @ O19 flat out doesn't work. You also spent less than half your main time, even though you have 5x60s byo-yomi. |

Almost any time that your opponent plays a 1-on-1 contact play, you should reply, and usually with a hane: Occasionally you may respond with a simple extension: ...but you almost never ignore it, unless you just want to abandon the stone. |

Your first four plays seem fine ( although 6 at C5 is theoretically better ). You are going for corners and then sides. That is good. But when the battle is joined at move 9, you seem to have no goals. So get a beginner's joseki book ( maybe '38 Basic Joseki' ). Try to figure out why joseki is joseki. Try not to play on the first rank so much in the early part of the game unless there is a clear need to do so. Around moves 30-36 it was ok because you were fighting for life. ( BTW, 36 at T17 kills him. ) But moves like 46, 82, and 86 were not good. ( At 86 you should have made the solid connection at D17; at 46 and 82 you should have tenukied. ) Remember, a stone usually has four liberties when you first play it; a stone on the side starts out with only three. In other words, your stone is already 1/4 dead as soon as you take your finger off it. You need a good reason for such an otherwise inferior play. |

But never mind, I didn't want to be rude and I apologize if I sounded so. Many thanks to you, and to all those dan-players who explain take their time to explain basics things again and again to us, beginners ![]() |

This is exactly my problem in fact: after fuseki I really don't know where I should play. I will try to buy that book and read it to see if it could help me. Thx! I'd agree with the fact that I should take more time to read out sequences ![]() |

mayweed wrote: I'd agree with the fact that I should take more time to read out sequences I disagree. At this stage, unfortunately taking more time on each move will not help you so much.![]() What is very helpful now is experience: finish 100 games as quickly as you can. Then review later. |
