Finally a game that was close, I lost by 0.5 points but I actually felt that the opening was better for me. When I closed my corner at 29 I was sure that I was ahead, so I must have made some mistakes after that (or with 29). Was there a better way to answer the monkey jump at move 156? I somehow feel like move 2 lost me the game, normaly I don't play 3-3 but I just wanted to try something new. Anything you can tell me about shapes, joseki, fuseki, direction of play and everything else would be appreciated. |

7: You don't need to do this. N3 is a long ways away, and does not really threaten your stone. 13: As Shaddy says, you cannot tenuki. If you have a presence on the lower right or the lower side that makes his outside strength unappealing, then you can tenuki. When it is his stones over in the lower right, you cannot let him have E3. It works too well with his other stones. The best play might be to consider this possibility on the previous move, and then choose a variation with a different direction, such as F3 instead of B5 on move 11. gotta go...maybe more later... EDIT: Back for a few minutes... 153: You want to ensure life. That's good. But you know that you will eventually have to play D19. So play it know. The result is a textbook live shape. Then you never have to play B18, so you win by 1/2 point. |

Go Seigen played 3-3 as B (same board position, rotated) on Dec 25, 1933 and won. (Dan promotion tourney, Go was 5p then, his opponent, W, 7p.) ![]() What's pro opinion on ![]() ![]() |

The sequence that starts at 37 is a huge gift for White. You're not really weak, so why strengthen your stones at the expense of giving him nice influence on the bottom? |

Thanks everyone! There is so much to learn from the comments. @Joaz: Your explanation about 13 is easy to understand. About 153, you could be right but at this stage of the game I tought I was ahead and played save. It happend a few times when I played something like D19 and suddenly my corner turned into a ko, I wanted to prevent that. @EdLee: I said that move 2 lost me the game because I never use 3-3 and do not know any of it's josekis, which leads to my tenuki at 13. @hyperpape: I aggree that this was bad but I thought there is a weakness there, but it didn't work out, however I was surprised to see white connect at 42. |

Of course in the game black's second move was fine, and I agree that most games will have mistakes in middlegame (and even yose) that are far larger than any opening mistakes, but that's not to say a game cannot be lost in the opening. Translating that advantage from the opening though to the scoring is difficult, but very satisfying when done. I'll post a few examples in a new thread to avoid clogging up this one. |
