Post subject: | Nascent's JS&I - Game 2 |
The second game I lost this year. It was played on January 2, 2013. The first loss of the year was posted here. I'll catch up to my current losses before too long. In this game, I thought I was doing pretty well, then my opponent proceded to invade and reduce my framework, cut my groups, and prove to me that my confidence was sorely inappropriate. I made several mistakes, more frequently as the game went on, until I self-atari'd a large group. I probably should have resigned well before that sequence anyway. I really have a lot of work ahead of me when it comes to improving my game. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, --nascent-- |

An expansion on one of SoDesuNe's comments. I'm a little unsure of it, but this is at least how I think: Move 9: when you approach a corner (with move 7), your opponent can choose to pincer or to simply stabilise their corner stone. If the latter, then they have two choices: make a base in the corner (kind of rare, but see moves 8-15 of the previous game you posted) or make a base on the side (the usual thing to do). It's unusual for you to want to let your opponent get both - why would you bother to approach a corner if you're willing to let your opponent get all the local profit? Well, there is one good answer to that: if you're getting more profit on the outside, e.g. by building a moyo or something. But your right-hand side is far too wide open at this point, and anything you build this early will be invaded or reduced very easily. As SoDesuNe says at move 41, your thickness pointing towards the right side is impressive, but the whole side is still very wide open - you're unlikely to turn it into big territory, and if white invades, white is unlikely to get a weak group you can chase around. A move like Q11 is big for both sides, I think. |

Thank you again, SodesuNe and billywoods! I'll look closely at your sugestions, instructions, and variations. I'm finding this very helpful. I'll add the anotated game record to my study journal as soon as I can! --nascent-- |
