Okay so the first handicap stone is just the komi ommited so it is like half a stone (a whole stone you take black and pass then its one stone and reverse komi) the second handicap stone is a whole one because it is like giving your opponent on stone handi and then passing. Why does the handicap system go .5,1.5,2.5 etc? |

The point of the handicap system is to produce evenly matched games. As it stands, white tends to win; the system is quite good, but if you were going to tinker with it the goal of the tinkering would be to help b, not w. |

Simplicity of understanding, rather than simplicity of underlying principle. Since handicap go is not the main event anyway, it is not so obviously important to change it. |
