What am I really gaining with this move? Not much. If anything, it seems it should be on the other side, [...]

Yes, you chose the wrong side. Really that is a SFK mistake: if there are two ways to cut, you don't give the weak group you hope to attack the stone to capture. If you like, it's a 1-2-3 error.

But this has given some good plays to your upper group, and lost White points in the upper corner. This is a clumsy way for White to play. It more than compensates Black for the exchange earlier (marked stones), which lost something.

So it probably means I should play somewhere else.

I think that's correct thinking. You have a weak group in the upper left. Making territory in the lower right would be logical.

I can see why I tenuki, as I thought I had a safety net, which I misread (cutting through to "get eye"). But anyway, I should help this group, I think.

It isn't absolutely necessary. Where can White build up territory by attacking it, right now? Think about a first as a large-scale play, then b if you get the chance.

Kirby wrote:
I could just give up and play a big point elsewhere, but leaving the group weak could be trouble for later...

There isn't yet a specific attack that is painful. On the other hand, if White answers :b3: with c, you have no more ideas around here.

I would play on the right. Playing at B3 is more interesting to get more settled on the left, I feel, anyway, because it is big and increases your options.

Yes, you are right. I wasn't as careful here as I should have been. I didn't have a plan for saving the left, so I should have considered helping the left, first. Though, as you mention below, perhaps the left group stands a chance. I didn't consider giving up the two stones:

Good idea. For some reason, a move like 'a' never comes to me. I would probably think of 'b' if I tenuki, but 'a' has some nice merits. I hadn't considered it at all. I like it, because it helps both the left, and makes good influence toward the bottom. It's a better move than I would have thought of, had I tenuki'd.

Yes, good point. I actually did think of this sequence briefly, but I thought it would hurt his two side stones. I didn't realize how powerful the cut was. Should have been more careful in reading!

Oh that? Maybe the worst move in the game :-)

1. I was totally oblivious to my weak stones on the left.
2. I saw that it was going to become regular ko, so I thought I would play a move to create ko threats. But this is, of course flawed logic: if he answers, it didn't create any new ko threats. So if I am going to pursue the ko, I should just play it.

But more than that, I should have done the double ko that ez4u mentioned. Or thought about the left group.

Many mistakes here.

Too true.

So in any case the attempt to cut right now looks premature, because Black can "threaten" to make this line work in various useful ways, in the centre.

Is white 2 too obedient? Maybe he would play at 3 himself, but then black can cut with good style of not giving a ponnuki. With 3 black loosely connects up his groups and develops some centre potential as well. But maybe it's a bit slow? I do quite like developing the right side moyo too.

(As mentioned already, I really don't like the marked exchange! Black 1 also gives black some flexibility in resisting the peep there which is just so humiliating to connect against making the marked stone a retarded empty traingle)

Yes, I wondered if a central strategy was good for Black. But I decided "side before centre": the lower right ought to be bigger.

Anyway, if Shusai can develop the enclosure in his retirement game against Kitani, it is worth a try.

I played this pincer, partially because I like it, but also because of black's stone on the top. His stone ended up making me worry about a weak group.

So maybe it is simpler to just do this way:

I feel like I got solid territory, and black's marked stone isn't anything to worry about. In fact, if I were black, I'd prefer that it were at 'a' instead.

So I think I should have played this way.

Key Takeaways

* Don't make two weak groups, especially ones that are close together.
* Don't try to be too fancy and/or aggressive in an urgent situation.

I would expect the avalanche situation there. where he plays atari and takes the right side. Then his top middle stone is good.

I think it's possible. But in that case, I would prefer if the black stone were on the 4th line (as black).

For example:

The marked stone seems low, and as white, I can reduce easily.

In contrast, if it were higher:

I think black's influence works better.

On the other hand, if we take the variation in the game, if the black stone had been on the 4th line:

The marked black stone is giving much less pressure than if it's on the third line. For example, I could always slide to 'a'.

---

So basically, I think that the avalanche is a possibility for black if I attach underneath, but I don't mind it at all, since his stone on top is low, and in my opinion, not ideally placed.

And I like the avalanche variation better than in the game, because my group felt pressured, and his stone on top worked well. If it was a 4th line stone, I think the way I played in the game might be better, since the avalanche works better for him.

This does seem much better, doesn't it? Especially with the low black stone on top.

I really like this idea. I need to avoid getting two weak groups, and like you said, it aims at a future invasion on the top.

Yeah, since I ignored him earlier, I think it's best to keep my money on the table. I chickened out, and he got benefit in both areas.

I played another game on KGS today, this time against 1k.

I should have lost. Lately, my "wins" are should-be losses. The beginning of the game was OK, but suddenly I made a mistake, and it was a disaster. At the end, I was very, very lucky.

Here's my review.

The game suddenly turned into a disaster when I played the marked stone. I was aiming at 'a', thinking that I could either attack the cutting stone, or cut at 'a'.

I didn't realize that 'b' was so powerful, and would be good to answer. In the game, since I went this route, I went all out and ignored 'b'. He captured me on the right.

Instead, I think I need to avoid disaster, and be more patient:

I think that the game is alright.

I think that the marked move is an overplay. It would probably make more sense to play around 'a'. Just last game review, I was mentioning about avoiding getting into a scenario with two weak groups.

Still, I could not avoid temptation to play it, even though I felt it was bad. I wanted to make up for the right side. I was not patient enough.

It may not have contributed as much to the disaster that resulted from the move in Position 1, but the marked move didn't create a good exchange for me, I think.

---

Overall, I think I was too rushed this game. He played kind of fast, and I wanted to play fast, too. I was too aggressive in the atari from Position 1, and aiming for the cut. I should have been more patient.

Again, I must remember:
Avoid having multiple weak groups.

Because of these too issues, I deserved to lose this game.

Some comments on the early play. :)

Main focus: Shape.

In the past couple of games you have made bad shape. Last time your play was heavy, this time it was thin. You shape was actually worse in the last game, but it still needs work.

Edit: Fleshed out a variation. :)

Bill, I've got a question: you say "really?" on :w8:, but it's joseki as far as I know and doesn't seem worse than anything else in this position. Why don't you like it? (Of course, the joseki responses to :b9: don't include tenuki.)

Also, a question for Kirby: were you trying to avoid the Kobayashi fuseki by approaching immediately? If so, why not just pincer?
