Post subject:  The beginning of losing my first 100 games.

I've known about Go for a long time, but never actually participate in it. The closest I've got to playing was pressing random move at the AI and read a few pages of books per day.

Recently, now that summer is here, I can (i guess) finally sit down and get serious. I'm buying a new board and stones (my bamboo one is now "cat-ridden" as you can see). I've got a tons of books (acquired by, ahem, not very legal means :batman: ) And have also recently joined IGS(pandago). For some reason, Jave doesn't seem to work for my laptop,so I can't download KGS. Which is an annoyance, since I heard that KGS ranking is more precise.

I played my first game at 1:00 the morning with my Pro-Procrastinator cap on. Now, the first person I played (lost) again was a 1kyu. He's also a non-English speaking German. I finally notice our lack of communication after I sent messages in the chat box and only receives a "hi" in return. Then I went and check his acc. and it shows that his country is Germany, so I thought " What a wonderful time to employ Google translate". Nevertheless, I only said that I am resigning. And he said that I have some to gain, but I'm stupid, so I honestly can't tell what I'm gaining. After that, I thank him for bothering with me and resign and left.

Here's the game: (I'm black)
Image

I resigned pretty early, since I think/believe that my right blacks are dead, and also because I seriously need to sleep. Needless to say. I'm an obvious 30kyus with jack-ideas about what's going on when playing with a real human.

So go ahead and laugh and point and smirk as my stupidity (while I rocked back and forth and cry in a corner)

ah, well. That's one down, 99 more games to go.(or lose)

And if you could contain your hilarity toward my stupidity long enough, could you please tell me wth was going on?

I will be updating my pathetic progress periodically so you lots can have some laugh for your day.

-Cheers!

I don't use IGS, but if you can find a way to download the game (usually as a .sgf file) and upload it here, you can get a better review. Just looking at the final position I can't tell you much.

But in general I wouldn't worry too much about it at first. Just play and have fun and try whatever seems good. You might try playing some smaller games (9x9 or 13x13) since they finish more quickly and have less going on.

Also if you want help with Java & KGS, we may be able to give you some advice there.

With the "Tetsuki" app, it is possible to send played games via email. For that purpose you have to open your game under the "saved games" section and then click the "i" button. Playing a 1k player on IGS as first game is a rather tough choice. I started with Go ~4 years ago and am still far away from 1k - so don't be discouraged... ;-)

or you can go here :

enter your user / password

and then you go to that link "Search match results and game records"
and you can download your games as sgf.

Hi CatLover, just play, play, and play.

All board sizes are OK -- 9x9, 13x13, 19x19 --
but you can finish more games sooner on the smaller boards.

After you have gained more experience with the finished 100 games,
consider to have your serious games reviewed (here or on KGS), etc.

Enjoy! :)

The proverb says to lose 100 games before you even have a clue about what is going on on the goboard. I am kgs 8k and I haven't even lost my first 100 ranked games yet. It just goes to show

Happy trails

What makes you think you have a clue what's going on on the go board? ;) I know I certainly don't, though I like to tell myself otherwise at times.

I thought I said I was 8k and still had no clue about what's going on.

Well I clearly don't, since I tried to make a joke that relied on misinterpreting your statement. :)

Catlover, nobody will laugh at your games because we've all been there (and to some degree we all still are.) Some of these guys may lecture you quite sternly, though. And you will learn from it. Especially from the ones who assign you homework.

I started a thread some time ago about the strange attraction Go boards have for cats! :D

For some reason (http://my.pandanet.co.jp/index-e.htm) does not connect for me. I was taken to a login page, I log on, put I'd still be at the blank login page

Haiz, and I got another game with another BC player (who is still much much muchhhhh, stronger than me). He said that I have an aggressive style of playing (I believe that it was more of wildly swinging a club like Neantherdals  ). When I can get the SGF, hopefully you far above the skies SDK can tell me why :salute:

If anyone could create a "Posting SGF for utter idiots" please do. I'm near tear with my inability to technology here  :(

You can find sgf posting information in this post: http://www.lifein19x19.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=833

Do note that the "sgf-full" tag has been replaced by the "sgf" tag.

The only trick to this is that, when you upload an attachment, make sure there isn't extra info in your link. So when you paste the link into the sgf tags make sure you remove the "mode=view&" tag the follows "file.php?" and anything else that follows the "id=4500" tag. Basically, make sure the only tag after the question mark is the id. So the url in the sgf tags should look something like this:
Code:
[sgf]http://www.lifein19x19.com/forum/download/file.php?id=4500[/sgf]

Here is the product:

Welcome to go! :)

About resigning:

The need for sleep is a good reason. :) However, when somebody gives a beginner 9 stones, they expect to win. The main point about playing 100 games quickly, and maybe losing them, is that you learn a lot just by playing. Every go game is (or can be) a learning experience. When you are just starting out, nearly everything that you learn will apply to many games. Since the point is playing, not winning, why resign? (That's true even if you are not taking 9 stones, BTW.)

What you do not want to do is bore your opponent. So do not dither. When you see a play you want to make, play it. When you don't, look for second best. Don't think for more than 10 - 15 seconds. You don't have anything to think about yet. What three year old ruminates about the choice of words?

Don't worry about winning or losing yet. Play to learn. Play for fun.

Good luck! :)

Well, I'm still having trouble with IGS. gwarhhh. Someone need to post a tutorial for idjits like me on how to handle this server. On the upside, I've manage to squeeze in 2 more games. Both presumably lost due to me not knowing how to save on the computer version of IGS and the fact that the Net Social Plaza..DOES NOT WORK. (*spew angry fire*)

I manage to tap a game on KGS, but was force to resign because I forgot to look at the battery meter and the poor Toshiba died on me.....

I must say, I really need to tap into those books now. I've got an iPad heavy with books, Now I need to just sort it out and start reading.

Summer can't come fast enough...Haiz...

==================================================================================================

Another note

I "tested" out my suppose strength by using (http://play.baduk.org/go-test/start.php?). I tried my best and reasoned in my humbleminded way and answer with what I feel is best and ended up with a score of 110/200. This mean that it ranked me at a 10kyu European, and according to the sensei.xmp.net conversion chart, that put me at a suppose 6k KGS and 9k IGS( :o ). Which made me kinda go "whaaaaaaaatt??? I certainly read a lot of tsumego and watched a decent amount of games before. But I don't think it's up to that extend yet. So I went back and was going to test again, but upon realizing that it's only the same problem, I click out. Half of my score was probably pure luck, but boys, you've been crush with mein egoo :D

Anyway,

Let's see if I can finally wrestle with this IGS and KGS thing, and hopefully when this stabilize, I can finally play "for real"

-Cheers!

I get 3k egf with that site; though, to be fair, it's a lot easier to be stronger when given a choice of 5 places to play rather than 361 - number of moves played.

Code:
perl -e 'print chr(ord("A") + int(rand(5)))'

This line of perl scored 114 points (about EGF 9kyu) on that test.

I guess you just have to play random moves to reach European single digit kyu. I wonder what the fuzz about playing games and doing tsumego is all about.

On KGS at least I know how to find your sgf files :)

Here are some comments on your (unfinished) game, just to give some ideas.
