I am lovelove. I decided to change my name, but couldn't find a way, so I made another acount with this new name. ![]() That my new name "MJK" is simply the western-ordered (given-sur) abbreviation of my own name. I am a Korean as in the title, who can speak some English and play go. I will soon fly to Amsterdam for collegiate studies, and therefore will stay in Europe for several years. I'm now really interested in European languages mainly Dutch and French, for their nothing-alike pronunciation with Korean or English. I like the western go society because despite the very thin layer of players, there are so much conversation and fun stories about this game, while in Korea with millions of players just playing the game to win. I personally have a optimistic view for the future western go world. Long live Go and L19. ![]() |

Hi MJK, I hope you enjoy your time in the Netherlands and that you find plenty of people to play go with. I also hope that you continue to enjoy your time on the L19 forums. I'm glad you feel Western go is moving forward and I'm glad that you enjoy the Western appreciation for the history and culture of the game. I know some Westerners who feel this attachment to figures like Shusaku or stories about great games is actually holding players back, but I agree with you. I think a love for go's stories will do a lot more to advance the game in the West than a strict focus on winning. J'aime le francais aussi. J'ai etude le francais por quatre ans. Il est une beau langue, et tres different d'anglais a l'oreille, mais la deux langues ont plus en commun. (Sorry for the lack of accent marks, I don't know how to add those.) Translation for non-French speakers: I like French too. I studied French for four years. It is a beautiful language, and very different from English to the ear, but the two languages have much in common. Some say that 30% of English is French and vice-versa, but I know many Americans that have great difficulty pronouncing French. Have a good day. |
