I played the marked stone. If I treated this as an opening problem, I feel the right side is bigger.

I like this move.

I finally played Q10 as above, but I have a weak group. Isn't that more urgent?? I should have played to help it.

I was stuck on hanging onto a single stone, and strengthened white. It makes more sense to just give up the stone. Seems like very small-minded thinking to me:

The move above is just stubborn, and thinking small scale. I gain just a couple of points, and leave a clear cutting point.

It's much simpler to just do this:

Here, I should just extend here, I think. Makes 'a' and 'b' miai.

--

These are the major pain points that stick out to me this game.

From this game, I learned.
1.) Do not think small scale. Think of the big picture! (Eg. give up the stone - or give him another couple of points on the second line to maintain a connection and not be cut!)
2.) Weak group is more urgent than a big point in the opening. Why did I abandon a weak group for a large point on the side?

These mistakes are silly, but still my weakness.

I played against KGS 1d today. I misread simple sequences, miscounted liberties on a group having only 3 liberties, and played poorly overall.

It hurt. I still feel pain from this game. I hope that this pain drives me to play better next game.

Here is the game, with my review.

It's obvious that the marked black stones are weak. Therefore, the invasion of :b1: is a serious overplay. I can't think of a satisfying way to defend the group, but I can't just hope he doesn't attack. It's urgent to help the group.

---

Things I learned from this game:
1. I really need to think more before playing. These simple reading mistakes are not acceptable.

---

This game was not only painful to play, but it was painful to review. During these reviews, I like to think of things that I learned during the game. But this is hard to do when I don't feel like I've played up to par with what I know. I *knew* the ladder affected the 5-4 joseki I played. But I ignored this knowledge. I also missed obvious reading mistakes.

If I can learn anything from this game, it's that I hope that I don't play this way again.

A quick comment for position 1.

Tenuki is always an option!

By playing in this corner you help him develop thickness for the centre, which is his obvious game plan. Now I wouldn't necessarily say taking the corner in sente is a mistake, but I think it's more interesting to tenuki, and makes it harder for him to co-ordinate his stones. If he follows up the tenuki with s5 you can do p2 to stop him getting a big corner, and your knight's move at the upper right corner is well placed to stop him getting too much on the right side. So where should the tenuki be? f3 approach is one idea: if he pincers I would look for a way to overconcentrate him on the lower side aiming for the p3 attach (but remember if he gets stronger on the lower side he could answer that with inside cut) and if he extends then you can settle on the lower side which mitigates the p4 thickness. Another idea would be to wedge the lower side, perhaps at j3 as m3 works well with p2 should that arise.

@Uberdude: It's a good point. I agree that I kind of walked into his plan here. I like your idea of spitting. It's pretty straightforward.

Just so I understand correctly, I'll write out diagrams of my interpretation of what you said.

I wonder how I might do this. To try to over-concentrate him, I can only think of attach on top. This only would seem to work with one-space pincer, and he might not play at :w4:, below. Also, the hane at :w8: might be a challenge if white was strong like this, like you mentioned..

Yeah attach on top is one idea, but you can't really tenuki to 7 at that point and should double approach the lower left. Also maybe you could tenuki after the pincer and play lower right immediately, that way the cut isn't so scary. Then attach on top, or double approach (high?), or one space jump and press.

Yeah, "extends" as in 'not a pincer', I don't really know an agreed English, or indeed Japanese, term for this. Sometimes I see "answers", but then a pincer is a kind of answer. Maybe 2 not 3 spaces though? Or slide?

You're alive, you have erased White's wall on the right and invaded the corner on the left. If 'a', then reply with 'b'. Black 34 certainly wasn't the problem. :blackeye:

Thanks, ez4u. I somewhat agree, and I actually considered this variation during the game (before misreading that I could connect @ 'a').

I do have a bit of a bad feeling about giving white 'a', even if I can play 'b', but given that I'm alive and have reduced his potential, maybe it's not *so* bad...

@Uberdude: Thanks for clarifying your previous suggestions.

Yeah, I am not 100% sure either way. With two spaces, there's the kick that makes it feel over - maybe OK since white is strong in the area. And with slide, white could still play on the other side.

Nonetheless, I like the idea of playing on the bottom first.

Yeah, those look like good ideas for white, but then it wouldn't be fair if only black had good moves ;-)

There is this way to dodge the kick:

Dang it... That's a pity. At least when I'm playing black. :-)

I haven't yet played a game today. I'm about to. I've got my computer ready, with a cup of coffee on hand.

I don't know who I will end up playing, yet - I'll find out shortly. But one thing is for sure. I will not play like I did yesterday. I may not win the game, and I may get a bad result. But I want to read that result, good or bad, before it happens. This will be my theme for playing today.

Here we go!

I played against KGS 1k today. I lost the game.

I focused on trying to see the result before playing today. For most of the early game I did this. I made a mistake in judgement to give him several points in the corner.

Still, it was a reasonable game. But then I tried reading a sequence to destroy his right territory. I read and read, but couldn't read a good way. But I played the move I *wanted* to work, anyway. Even though I didn't read the plan. This was the biggest point of regret from this game.

It looks like I still have a bit to learn on this front.

Here is the game, with my comments.

(SGF is screwed up around move 74, but you can see the sequence in the variation.)

At move 60, L14 should eat the cutting stones.

At move 74, G14 cut is more important than anything, IMO.

I played the marked move. It doesn't make a lot of sense. Even if he responds, what to I gain? I should either tenuki, expecting to save the cut, or simply extend.

In response to black's threat on my corner, I connected the group. I can understand a possible tenuki if I was confident I could live, but was my move really that valuable? The fact that he captured the two white stones in sente was huge.

I regret the marked move and the sequence that followed more than anything else this game (suitable for #4, eh?). I did try to read a way for white to get profit here. I wanted it to work.

But I couldn't read something working. It felt like something was there, and it should work. So I still played the move.

This is a problem I must overcome.

---

Learning points.
1. If I do not read a sequence that works... Do not play it.
2. When playing tenuki, consider carefully if the tenuki is worth more than answering. I think ignoring his threat to my corner was very big, even if I ended up living.

I think you are correct. I didn't even consider it during the game.

Hmm, I didn't realize how big it was. I suppose it makes both of his groups weak. Good idea.

I played three games today - well, the first was an escaper after the first 10 moves or so. The second one, I misread early on, then lost big pretty early.

Then I played the game I'm showing today.

I think I'm in a slump. I keep losing :-(

Anyway, despite that, here is the review.

I thought I should keep pressure on the marked stones. But given that white is somewhat strong on the left, it's probably a safer strategy to just defend the corner - though it feels slightly slack.

Learning points:
1. Read out capturing race clearly - don't just go by feeling.
2. Think carefully about when to play safely, and when to apply pressure. Too much pressure at wrong time makes me snap. Not enough pressure makes it easy for the opponent to attack.
3. Get out of this slump.

:b8:, :b40: and I think :b56: all ended up misplaced. It is harder to fight when your forces lack coordination.
