I thought about this more during my lunch break.

I'm starting to think it can result in ko in multiple ways:

The sad part is, I'm not 100% sure, yet. This seems like something I shouldn't struggle with as much, but I guess I am.

I'll think about this more, as I go back to my day job.

See you after work...

I guess the negative part of this move is that I strengthen his group. Is that it?

My sense is that R-13 is a dual purpose play, while the approach from the top allows Black to shore up his weakness on the right. Still, you may be right.

It seems clear that the White group on the left side is too far away and that it will work better with a pincer.

Yes, you strengthen the Black group. See http://senseis.xmp.net/?SqueezingOutTheToothpaste

But you also end up weakening your floating stones. Three stones in a row on the E file are hardly strong. They are, in fact, heavy. Better to strengthen your two stones now with a jump to G-14.

See you after work...

The large knight's move is often a mistake, as it seems to be here. White should live with 2 through 6. Black can't play 7 because of 8, so White can play 'a' to live after Black connects.

$$ | a O X X O . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . X X . O . X . . . . . . . . X . . . |[/go]

The small knight's looks like the move, making ko. But the ko does not seem like such a burden for White. White takes first after 7. When Black retakes after a ko threat/response, 8 is an internal ko threat. Again after take, threat, response, retake, White can play 'a' as an internal ko threat, answered by 'b'. If later White decides to win the ko, the play at 'c' creates life via a double ko. Somewhere along the way White can choose to play 'd' as another internal ko threat since there is a White stone on C12 in the game. At the point in the game where Black attacked the corner, though, White is probably better off to give up the corner in exchange for two moves in a row on the outside. There are a lot of large normal moves that White could take advantage of.

I see, Bill. I stopped reading after 5 in the second diagram. I missed that Shaddy explained this, too.

So, I guess the fact that I played C19 in the game proves that I didn't care enough about the capturing race to read out this sequence.
That's a big problem.

Hey, ez4u. Actually, I read this variation, too, but then I was afraid of this response:

Sounds selfish, but somehow, it is refreshing to know that other people can be wrong about variations, other than me :p

I may just be saying this since I just drank wine...

You're right. The ko in the SGF file was Kirby's.

I've had a drought on winning. Finally, I was able to win a game. Here, I played KGS 1d.

I will post variations later, but I have to go to my day job for now.

When you pulled out your stones with :b1: below, what was your plan if White captures them? I assume you would cut with :b7: but White gets a lot of central strength.

@ez4u: The simple answer is that I overlooked the net :-)

Also, sorry I didn't get around to posting variations, yet. Mostly, I'll probably go over what I already mentioned in the SGF.

Yesterday, I had a match for the AYD, which I took quite some time on (and I lost :-(), so I didn't get to doing this, yet.

I played another game on KGS today against KGS 1d.

It's been awhile since I played rated KGS game, and I played too fast. He also played too fast, so it's kind of not really a go game. Well, it's go, but the strategy doesn't make sense.

Anyway, here's my review.

I played the marked move, but I don't think it's the biggest area, yet. The right side is still open, so I think it's bigger.

I should play here:

I was afraid of black's potential, so I played the marked move. But I think it's a bad move. If I try to make something in that area, black will get solid points in the marked area.

I think I'm already a bit behind because of my slow move from Position 1, but at this point, I should just stay calm and play normally.

Something like this:

To add to the mayhem, I started to move out with the marked stone. Seriously... What can I really expect here? While he's attacking my group, he'll get tons of points in the center and on the right.

AND I don't have the corner. I should still just take the corner, I think.

Clearly, it's better. I think I have a good lead if I play this move.

But in the game, it was close, in my opinion, when he quit.

Takeaways From This Last Game

1. Don't play too quickly. This is a thinking game. Think.

2. Be patient, and don't jump into the opponent's area - don't overplay.

3. Play the biggest moves.

---

As a side note, I am thinking about whether I should start making streaming go videos. Seems to be all the rage these days. I'm still deciding, though, since there's some allure to hiding behind an avatar on the forums.
